In honor of Sonam Kapoor’s birthday, here’s the list of the good, the good and the more good and some jealousy thrown in more for good measure.

First and foremost is fashion. Sonam Kapoor is hands down the most stylish woman in Filmistan. Nobody stands a chance. It’s not that people don’t look good, they do, well sometimes they do. But, no one else has such a clearly defined style that is completely spot on and she isn’t afraid to take risks.

She is so much fun in her interviews, we remember her from Oye It’s Friday…she’s not so polished when she speaks, but that’s a good thing because you know she’s real. And she has this quirky side we love, because it’s so nice to see someone be themselves and instead of fitting into some sort of Filmi mold.

We simply adored her in her first film Saawariya. We envied her for being launched by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and that too in a beautiful “blue” movie, wearing some of the most gorgeous outfits and romancing in a fake little town!

We envied her even more, when we found out that she assisted Sanjay during Black.

Love the fact that she seems to be doing movies with some thought. They’re different enough, giving us the chance to see her grow. Even though her role in Delhi 6 wasn’t a huge one, it left a mark. Loved the character she played! And now we can’t wait to see her in “I Hate Luv Storys” and “Aisha.”

Until Sonam came into Filmistan, we don’t think we ever looked upto anyone for their fashion sense, except maybe Priety Zinta sometimes. Sonam has always amazed us with some of the most eclectic outfits – kundan necklace, asymmetrical dress and gladiator sandals. It’s not that fashion is the only reason we love her, it’s a major part in why we do, but for now she’s still a newcomer of sorts. There have been only two movies out and we haven’t gotten a chance to see her on TV as much, so we’re still getting to know her…as much as people can without meeting someone.

As we get to know her, we’re sure the list will grow. Until than, we can admire her fashion sense, because we rarely get to gush over someone in Filmistan because of their clothes and you guys know how much we love fashion, after all we did study it. Below is a gallery of some of our favorite outfits.

In honor of one of our favorite filmistani fairies (our fairy godmother that is…at least he should be), here are a few reasons on why we love, hate and obsess over Karan Johar.

We both love and hate him for making us feel like Kamini from Salaam-E-Ishq, making us wait for that one call from his, so our life can begin.

We hate how the Universe plays games with us when it come to Karan. We always get so close to meeting him and then it doesn’t happen! We almost got to work on MNIK and then Jasmine was at the Kites premiere (yeah we’ll explain this in the next post!) and didn’t even see him once. It’s incidences like this that make us believe that there is something special when it comes to Karan…we just need to be patient, or maybe the Universe just hates us!

We love that he does ‘Kofee with Karan’ and ‘Life Kara De.’ Just love those shows, especially KWK. Can’t wait for the next season, wish they would do it regularly instead just doing it whenever they feel like it. We need that in our lives, at least until we aren’t working on the sets of a movie as production designers, costume designers or assistant designers and of course giving every single Filmi celebrity a makeover, except maybe Sonam.

We love his ‘chirkutiness!’*

We love his vision of movies. The movies might be overly ‘Filmi’ (LOVE!), but damn if they aren’t the most beautiful things you’ve seen on the screen. The clothes, the places, the furniture…just go watch ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna.”

We love him for making a film like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. It might be cheesy, but if that’s not a modern day classic than we don’t know what is! It was the first DVD we ever bought and is one of the most quotable movies ever…legendary dialogues like “kuch kuch hota hai, tum nahin samjhoge,” “she’s your best friend yaa” or “tusi jaa rahe ho, tusi naa jao.”

We love his sense of humor and the sarcasm. At least one person in the industry who’ll understand us.

We love seeing him grow with his movies, that he tried something like ‘My Name is Khan’… even though it was still too corny.

But really most of all, we love him because that is one person that we want to work with. To be on the sets of a ‘Dharma Production,’ to be part of making a Karan Johar film, that is a dream come true…khuda sabr de!*

So, happy birthday Karan, because you are one of the reasons that we have dreams.
________________________________________________________________________

*Chirkutiness: a mixture of dork, nerd, and cuteness…still doesn’t really explain it, but if you watch his interviews on ‘Koffee with Karan’ and ‘Life Kara De’ you should see it.

*Khuda Sabr De: God give us patience…reference to a dialogue from ‘Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.’

The day we’re pondering where we stand on the one year anniversary of this blog, we receive our first ever press release! Miss Malini would have a laugh riot! Why you ask? Well the public relations machinery — in the words of Malini — of Mumbai has a bad reputation, not only are the press releases usually fatuous, but the spelling and grammar leave a lot to be desired.

Well this press-release isn’t about some TV personality, nor is it from Mumbai. This is about Veer and the British actors that are partaking in the movie and it’s from the UK. It seems the PR people associated with Hindi TV and films don’t have spell-check or find it unnecessary to learn grammar. (This is giving PR people a really bad reputation, we both chose Public Relations as our options and anyone who has studied Communication realizes the value of good writing.)

We didn’t change anything, there’s a lot of information, read on if you want to play ‘connect the spelling and grammar mistakes.’ Guess at least we got some good quality pictures out of it…and if we’re getting press releases that should mean something good, right?

Sona: Ok so, aaj hamarey blog ki saalgirah hai, exactly one year since we first wrote for it…
Jasmine: Yeah seriously, one year aur life abhi bhi ghatiya hai! (Yeah seriously, one year and our life still sucks!)
Sona: Seriously! Kyun?! (Why?!)
Jasmine: So Karan ko koi sapna nahin aya aur hamein koi phone call nahin ayee… (So Karan didn’t dream about us nor did he call us)
Sona: Nahin….stupid Karan! (No…stupid Karan!)
Jasmine: Are we Kaminis from Salaam-e-Ishq that we keep waiting for that phone call?
Sona: Yeah, we seriously are.
Sona: Paagal ho jaayenge if we have to keep waiting, it’s already been a lifetime for god’s sake! (We’ll go crazy if….)
Jasmine: However, a lot has changed in this year…we’re on Twitter and ocassionally get replies from Filmistanis and not to forget the few interviews we did!
Sona: Yeah, I guess…it’s not all bad, but it seems like we’re more depressed.
Jasmine: I mean we’re still jobless…I took up two jobs and quit
Jasmine: You think someone might offer us a job after reading this…hope is all we have…
Sona: Sigh…you know My Name is Khan is about to release
Jasmine: We’re jinxed when in comes to MNIK
Sona: Seriously! First that interview with Prashant Shah for a job on the set for their SF shoot which is actually what we want to do for real, not just some crazy fans trying to meet famous people! Than that casting call for extras in Novato…found out too late and than thinking maybe if we met Karan once*….(Yeh Karn bhi naaa….imagine Kirron Kher from Hum Tum!)
Sona: It seems everything else has come full circle and hamari life abhi tak ghatiya hai (full circle…and our life still sucks!)
Jasmine: We seem to have a real connection with the film, yet we don’t!
Sona: What are we going to do? Stalking didn’t pan out, what’s our next plan?
Jasmine: Bothering them on twitter?!
Sona: Twitter zindabad!
Jasmine: Yeah like we have a choice!
Sona: Hmmmm……
_______________________________________________________________________
*Since we knew where the cast and crew were staying we actually went to the hotel once again tried stalking Karan and Shahrukh in San Francisco when they were shooting in SF for MNIK, we missed them by a few hours…boo!

Song Name: Dil To Bachcha Hai
Film/Album: Ishqiya
Singer(s): Rahat Fateh Ali Khan
Music Director: Vishal Bhardwaj
Lyricist: Gulzar

Aisi Uljhi Nazar Unse Hatt Ti Nahin
Daant Se Reshmi Dor Katt Ti Nahin
Umar Kab Ki Baras Ke Safaid Ho Gayi
Kaari Badri Jawani Ki Chatt Ti Nahin
Wallah Yeh Dhadkan Bhadne Lagi Hai
Chehre Ki Rangat Udne Lagi Hai
Darr Lagta Hai Tanha Soney Mein Ji
Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji
Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji
Thoda Kachcha Hai Ji
Haan Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji
Aisi Uljhi Nazar Unsey Hatt Ti Nahin
Daant Se Reshmi Dor Katt Ti Nahin
Umar Kab Ki Baras Ke Safaid Ho Gayi
Kaari Badri Jawani Ki Chatt Ti Nahin
Ra ra ra ..

Kisko Pataa Tha Pehlu Mein Rakha
Dil Aisa Baaji Bhi Hoga
Hum Toh Hamesha Samajhte The Koi
Hum Jaisa Haaji Hi Hoga
Hai Zor Karein, Kitna Shor Karein
Bewaja Baaton Pe Ainway Gaur Karein
Dilsa Koi Kameena Nahin
Koi Toh Rokey, Koi Toh Tokey
Iss Umar Mein Ab Khaogay Dhokhey
Darr Lagta Hai Ishq Karney Mein Ji
Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji
Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji
Thoda Kachcha Hai Ji
Haan Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji

Aisi Udhaasi Baithi Hai Dil Pe
Hasne Se Ghabraa Rahe Hain
Saari Jawani Katraa Ke Kaati
Piri Mein Takra Gaye Hain
Dil Dhadaktaa Hai Toh Aise Lagta Hai Woh
Aa Raha Hai Yahin Dekhta Hi Na Ho
Prem Ki Maarein Kataar Re
Taubah Yeh Lamhe Katt Te Nahin Kyun
Aankhon Se Meri Hatt Te Nahin Kyun
Darr Lagta Hai Mujhse Kehney Mein Ji
Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji
Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji
Thoda Kachcha Hai Ji
Haan Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji

And while we are at it, Striker also looks very interesting…looks like the 80s!

This movie looks like a ‘film noir.’ It’s always fun to see if the director can pull off a mystery/thriller. We’re also looking forward to seeing Farooq Sheikh back on the silver screen after a while…also Abhimanyu was amazing in Gulaal. Hoping this will be a good film for Celina and hoping that she’s actually good in the movie…wow can’t remember any of her past characters from movies…oh yeah she was pretty decent in ‘No Entry.’
It has it’s pluses…Priyanka’s in it, it’s a Yashraj banner…but it still doesn’t look promising. We’re basically looking forward to seeing this one to see if it actually turns out as bad as we think it’s going to be.

Uhh plus…Kajol and Shahrukh together again!

Release Date: February 2010
Director: Pooja Bhatt
Really not a film we’d put in our “waiting” category because of a certain Mr. Reshammiya, but this one’s directed by Pooja Bhatt! We loved Pooja Bhatt’s “Paap” and have seen it too many times…it’s such a visual delight ;)

Release Date: May 28, 2010
Director: Prakash Jha
Cast: Nana Patekar, Ajay Devgan, Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Manoj Bajpai, Arjun Rampal, Naseruddin Shah
Just look at the cast and you’ll see why we’re dying to watch this movie…that’s hardcore people! Nana’s back! The story also sound so interesting plus can’t wait to hear more Hindi dialogues from Katrina…

Other movies that we are looking forward to in the upcoming year are ‘Delhi Belly’ because it’s an Aamir Khan production, he always makes an excellent ‘product.’ ‘Hook Ya Crook’ because John is in it, but it’s already been delayed and that has us worried…just look up ‘Aashayein’ and you’ll see why. ‘Karthik Calling Karthik’ because of Farhan. ‘Ayesha’ because Sonam and Abhay – that’s just cute! More reasons needed? Amazing clothes worn by Sonam and c’mon it’s Abhay Deol, he’s never done a bad film…okay lets not jinx that. ‘I Hate Love Stories’ because again we love Sonam and she’s opposite Imran Khan…plus the title is intriguing. ‘Anjana Anjani’ because really excited to see Ranbir and Priyanka together! ‘Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai’ is on this list only and only because of Lara, otherwise it looks like another piece of garbage. Okay our fellow Filmistanis…that’s enough for today! Tata!

Asha Bhosle was born in Sangli, Maharashtra, into the family of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar. Her father was a theater actor and classical singer who had been born in the village of Mangeshi in Goa. When she was nine years old, her father died. The family moved from Pune to Kolhapur and then to Bombay.

She and her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar began singing and acting in films to support their family. She sang her first film song Chala Chala Nav Bala for the Marathi movie Majha Bal (1943). The music for the film was composed by Datta Dawjekar. She made her Hindi film debut when she sang the song Saawan Aaya for Hansraj Behl’s ‘Chunariya’ (1948).

She was 16 when she eloped with the 31-year-old Ganpatrao Bhosle and married him despite of her family’s objection. Ganpatrao was Lata Mangeshkar’s personal secretary and the marriage failed because of Asha’s husband and in-laws ill-treatment. Later, Ashaji married the famous music director RD Burman in 1980 and were together until he passed away.

She has won many awards for her contribution to the arts including many Filmfare awards, BBC Lifetime Achievement Award, Swaralaya Yesudas Award, The Freddi Mercury Award, the Padma Vibushan, two National Awards and The Dadasaheb Phalke Award. She was also the first Indian singer to be nominated for a Grammy.

Ashaji is obviously one of our most favorite singers because of her unusual voice and hatke adaa that is prevalent in her songs. She is a delight to watch on screen and is always dressed impeccably in beautiful sarees and diamonds! We still remember on Sundays whenever ‘Aaja Aaja Main Hoon Pyar Tera’ would play on Chitrahaar, it would make us so happy. What sets her apart is her music apart from the film industry…she has released many of her own albums and her music videos are just as entertaining as watching a song.

This is one our favorite songs and the video is so touching.

She is the only filmi singer who has reinvented herself over the years to give the audience a variety of songs. If she sang sad depressing songs in the early 60s, then she also sang Helen’s cabarets in the 70s. From soulful ghazals to pop, she tried everything. She recorded the a huge number of songs with RD Burman in the 80s and made remixes of her own songs in the 90s. Later on she made a few albums where she collaborated with other singers and actors who tried their hand in singing.

There are so many songs of hers that we love, this is just a small list of our favorites:

We love the way she says “Cham Cham” in this song!

Not many people know that Ashaji is a great cook and her paya curry, Goan fish curry and dal are very popular with the Kapoor family. Oh we would love to have some Goan fish curry prepared by Ashaji, chalo ek din hopefully we can make a request! Even though Ashaji is turning 76 today, there is no sign of stopping for this diva.

She’s collaborating with Robbie Williams for his eighth solo alblum, Reality Killed The Video Star. This is not her first international collaboration and her first collaboration was with British singer-songwriter, Boy George, on his single Bow down mister, in 1991. She has worked on other projects that include – British boy band Code Red on “We can make it,” American rock singer Michael Stipes on “The way you dream” and American String Quartet, Kronos Quartret on the album, You’ve Stolen My Heart, for which she was nominated for the Grammy Awards 2006 and the band Cornershop released a song as a tribute to her, titled “A brimful of Asha.”

We admire her for taking risks in her career and delivering an array of songs that have entertained us for years. We absolutely love Asha Ji and look forward to many more songs in the future. Need to give “mera kuch saaman” another listen…hands down, this our favorite Asha Ji song!

Sampooran Singh Kalra, better known by his pen name Gulzar is an Indian poet, lyricist and director. He was born to Makhan Singh Kalra and Sujan Kaur, in Dina, Jhelum District, British India. Before he was Gulzar saab he worked as a car mechanic in a garage. He took the pen name Gulzar Deenvi after becoming an author. He’s won countless accolades for his work including an Oscar for “Jai Ho” but that’s not of extreme importance because he’s also won a Padma Bhushan, five National Awards and 20 Filmfares.

Gulzar saab has also given a new genre to Hindi Literature known as Triveni. Triveni is a form of Hindi/Urdu poetry initiated by the poet Gulzar. Unlike sher, a triveni consists of three misras. The first two are complete in themselves, but the addition of the third misra gives a new facet all together. You can hear this genre in the album ‘Koi Baat Chale’ on which he collaborated with Jagjit Singh.

He also has one of the most beautiful voice; it’s so calming to listen to. Check out this poem he recited at the Vishwa Hindi Sammelan.

“Jungle Jungle Pata Chala Hai, Chaddi Pehen Key Phool Khila Hai” – this is what we looked forward to on Sunday mornings. We’d get up early and make sure to catch the theme song of ‘The Jungle Book.’ Obviously at that age we didn’t know who had written the song, but today we pay tribute to the one and only Gulzaar saab whose worked we’ve admired since we were little kids.

Gulzaar saab has never really been in the limelight, but whenever you see him, he’s dressed in the most beautiful plain white khaadi kurta-pyjamas…that’s one of our favorite things about him. Apart from his dress sense, we can’t really comment on Gulzar saab the person. We certainly wish we had a way with words like Gulzar saab taanki hum unki tareef main chand alfaaz likh sakein…lekin hum toh unki juti ke barabar bhi nahin, so instead we’re going to talk about some of our favorite works by Gulzar saab.

He directed Maachis (1996), Lekin… (1990), Ijaazat (1987), Angoor (1982), Khushboo (1975), Mausam (1975), Aandhi (1975), Mere Apne (1971) among others. Many of his movies tackled issues that were relevant and still are many years after, but he also has a great sense of humor…as seen in Angoor, an all time favorite movie!

He also produced a TV serial, Mirza Ghalib (1988), telecast on DD National in which Naseeruddin Shah played the role of Ghalib.

As we were making a list, it became terribly difficult to post every song we love because it’s so long, so we’ll post a few and try to post more of our favorite Gulzar saab songs on the site occasionally. Here are some of them:

Khamoshi – ‘Hamne dekhi hai’ (1969)
Khamoshi- ‘Tum Pukar Lo Tumhara Intezar Hai’ (1969)
Anubhav – ‘Meri Jaan Mujhe Jaan Na Kaho’ (1971)
Parichay – ‘Musafir Hoon Yaro’ (1972)
Aandhi – ‘Zindagi Mein Shikwa To Nahin’ (1975)
Ghar – ‘Aap Ki Ankhon Mein Kuchh’ (1978)
Thodi Si Bewafai – ‘Hazar Rahen Mud Ke Dekhi’ (1980)
Sannata – Bas Ek Chupsi Lagi Hai (1981)
Masoom – ‘Tujhse naraaz nahin zindagi’ (1983)
Ijaazat – ‘Mera kuchh saamaan’ (1987)

Favorite Albums:

Maachis (1996)
Dil Se (1998)
Satya (1998)
Asoka (2001)
Saathiya (2002)
Bunty Aur Babli (2005)
Yaahan (2005)
Omkara (2006)
Jhoom Barabar Jhoom (2007)
No Smoking (2007)
Kaminey (2009)

Okay this will never end, so we’ll stop here…

We feel so fortunate to be able just share time with this living legend, that hum aise mahaan kavi ki kavitaaon ka lutf utha sakte hain. We look forward to many more songs by one of our most favorite lyricist in filmistan…

Tum jeeyo hazaaron saal, yeh hamari hai aarzoo…Happy Bir-day to you!

As is and will remain a tradition from now on, we’re going to give you all the reasons we can for loving the “Birthday Filmistani.” This time, it’s none other than Piggy Chops! If there is one word we can use to define Priyanka, then it has to be “filmi.” People can be a part of Filmistan but not everyone has the adaa and kiswat of a true filmi. We might be assuming a lot, but we’re hardly ever wrong about these kinds of things…in our head. You can see her filminess from the various public appearances, her demeanor, and especially her choice of films.

Ba mulaezaa hoshiaar…the jaazib-e-zebaa, the saaqib Piggy Chops ke baare mein guftagu karne wale hai: (Be ready, we’re going to talk about the attractively-graceful and sublime Priyanka Chopra)*

We absolutely adored her when she came on “Oye! It’s Friday,” every moment was so much fun! Words don’t do justice, make sure you catch that episode.

Loved, loved, loved her character in Salaam-e-Ishq! Kamini is definitely one our most favorite filmi characters of all time and we have a strong suspicion that it might be quite close to Priyanka’s real personality.

She loves doing action films… where she actually gets to kick some ass (Don, Drona)! Secretly, all filmi girls want to do action films where they get to beat up some bad guys!

She has a really sweet voice and she uses both Hindi and Urdu quite frequently when she speaks. (Most Filmis end up speaking English…we don’t enjoy that as much as we enjoy listening to a fluent Hindustani speaker.

She can sing! Another trait of a filmi person. All filmis want to sing because we sure do!

She has a good plastic surgeon! Yeah, this might come off as a bit snarky, but if you’re going to get some surgery done…please do it like Priyanka! Just compare Koena and Priyanka, you’ll know why this made our list. (Now, if we think plastic surgery is a good idea or not, especially in the long run, well that’s for another post!)

She is part of these films: Aitraaz, Don, Dostana, Fashion, Salaam-e-Ishq, upcoming What’s Your Rashee (Ashutosh Gowarikar), Pyaar Impossible (YRF!), and Kaminey (she’s holding a machine-gun in one of the stills…you know you want to see that).

Karan Johar follows her on Twitter…yeah that’s right, we’re that shallow.

And finally, she’s so proper and polished but not like Ash (don’t worry we don’t hate Aishwariya, at least not anymore…haha). The filminess just makes her so much more fun!
_______________________________________________________________________
Adaa: style, attitude
Kiswat: manner (ism)
Saaqib: shining brightly/splendid/sublime
Jaazib: alluring/attractive
Zebaa: adorned/beautiful/proper/graceful
*Jaazib-e-Zebaa: just two words we threw together to sound all cool and look like we know something about Urdu
